Languages and dialects in Macedonia

The course is instrumental in providing insight on the historical importance of ancient Macedonia concerning language which is a key component relating to the identity of every population group.

The syllabus focuses on introducing the students to the understanding of fundamental terms of historical linguistics and the tools available that help approach language and linguistic forms that have ceased to be used for centuries.

Special emphasis will be given to the mapping of Paleo-Balkan language groups, the distribution of dialects documented on the dialect atlas of northern Greece and the awareness of the criteria that lead to the relevant classification of dialects.
