Ancient Art (monumental art)

Given that this is a core course in the framework of the programme, its objectives are:

  1. To acquaint students with the material remains in the area of the kingdom of Macedonia, concrete evidence of their activity in the political, religious and daily life.
  2. The archaeological monuments and mainly those with monumental character provide students with a measure and, at the same time, a medium of comparison of the cultural development of Macedonia to the rest of the ancient Greek World.
  3. Most of the grand monuments relate to religious and social life, such as the impressive Macedonian tombs, or to political and financial life, such as palaces, theatres and forums. The fortification relics may provide an image of the cities. Contemporary works, such as the numerous relics of the Great Painting Era, reveal artistic relationships and trends of the era.
