Gounaris is the author of Steam over Macedonia: Socio-Economic Change and the Railway Factor, 1870-1912 (East European Monographs, 1993); Family, Economy, and Urban Society in Bitola, 1897-1911 (Stachy, 2000 in Greek); Social and other Aspects of Anticommunism in Macedonia during the Greek Civil War (Paratiritis, 2002 in Greek); The Balkans of the Hellenes, from Enlightenment to World War I (Epikentro, 2007 in Greek). He was honoured twice with the Athens Academy award for his books. He is also the editor and co-author of Identities in Macedonia (Papazisis, 1997 in Greek); The Toll of Blood in Thessaloniki during the German Occupation: Military Command, Resistance, and Survival (Paratiritis, 2001 in Greek), Refugees in the Balkans: Memory and Integration (Patakis, 2004 in Greek), Irregular Warfare: Macedonia, Civil War, Cyprus (Patakis, 2010) and of four volumes with documents on the Greek Struggle for Macedonia (1903-1908). His ‘English’ articles have appeared in the Journal of Modern Greek Studies, Balkan Studies, Review, Journal of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, European History Quarterly, East European Quarterly, Etudes balkaniques, European Review of History, Journal of Southeast European & Black Sea Studies, Journal of Southern Europe and the Balkans, Journal of European Economic History, Balkanologie, The Historical Review, and in several edited volumes (among them three published by the Centre for Hellenic Studies, King’s College).
