Marco Miotto

Dr. Marco Miotto was born in Padova (Padua), Italy, in 7 April 1967.

From 1996 he lives in Greece.

He is married with one child.

 

Higher Education

2004 - June 2007: Ph.D. in Medieval and Byzantine Story (grade: “Arista”-Excellent). Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Philosophy, Department of History and Archaeology: doctoral dissertation on “The conflict between Fatimid Caliphate and Byzantine Empire in Near East and the role of Italian cities in the region in 10th and 11th centuries”. (Ο ανταγωνισμός Βυζαντίου και Χαλιφάτου των Φατιμιδών στην Εγγύς Ανατολή και η δράση των ιταλικών πόλεων στην περιοχή κατά τον 10ο και 11ο αιώνα).

2001 – November 2003: Master of Arts in Medieval and Byzantine History (grade: “Arista”–Excellent). Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Philosophy, Department of History and Archaeology: Title of Master dissertation: “The Islamic conquest of Syria. How and why Byzantium lost its East” (Η ισλαμική κατάκτηση της Συρίας. Πώς και γιατί το Βυζάντιο έχασε την Ανατολή του).

November 1993: Bachelor’s degree in Islamic History. Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice (grade: 110/110 – Excellent). Title of final dissertation “Spice trade between the Venetian Republic and the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt from the rise of the Circassian dynasty to the ottoman conquest, 1382-1517” (Il commercio delle spezie tra la Repubblica Veneta e il Sultanato Mamelucco d’Egitto dall’avvento della dinastia circassa alla conquista ottomana, 1382-1517).

Courses taught: The Italian cities in the Early Middle Ages History of the Intermediterranean Trade in the Early Middle Ages Introduction to Islamic history Issues of Islamic history The Arabs before Islam Muhammad and Islam Modern and Contemporary History of the Arab countries The Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt and Syria Islamic societies The Arab-Israeli conflict

- 2009-2010: Academic staff member 407/80 (equivalent to Lecturer) in the Department of History and Ethnology at the Democritus University of Thrace (Komotini). Courses taught: History of the Islamic World Muhammad and the rise of Islam

- February 2010: elected Lecturer of History of the Islamic World in the Department of History and Archaeology at the Democritus University of Thrace (Komotini).

 

Participation – Organizing of congresses

- 24-27.5.2007: participation in the 28th International Panhellenic Congress of History organized by the Hellenic History Association, in Salonica, Greece, with the presentation “Οι ναυτικές εκστρατείες των Μαμελούκων της Αιγύπτου εναντίον των Πορτογάλων στον Ινδικό Ωκεανό (1506-1509, 1516) κατά τις αραβικές και βενετικές ιστορικές πηγές” (Sea expeditions of Mamluks against Portuguese in the Indian Ocean (1506-1509, 1516) according to the Arabic and Venetian sources).

- 23-25.5.2006: participation in the 27th International Panhellenic Congress of History organized by the Hellenic History Association, in Salonica, Greece, with the presentation “Αντικρουόμενες πληροφορίες από βυζαντινές και βενετικές πηγές για τη ναυμαχία της Ρόδου (1099 ή 1100)” (Contrasting information from Byzantine and venetian sources about the naval battle of Rhodes (1099 or 1100)).
